Finally… spring weather. As we know, the welcomed arrival of spring can advance somewhat suddenly into scorching days of summer. This makes me wonder if I am prepared for the heat. And by me, I mean our 30-year-old home which of course houses me, Brian, and our young kids. Our A/C is original to this home. It could get pretty warm this summer, intolerably so, UNLESS we have good air conditioning.
What about the variety of spiritual seasons we experience? When the trials and heat index increase in our lives… are we prepared with prayer? I wonder if my life is sufficiently prayer-conditioned for such a season? Have I turned on the “cool” that is the access to God through prayer?
In Psalm 61, David inquires of God to attend to his prayers.
1 Hear my cry, O God;
Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will abide in Your tabernacle forever;
I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah
5 For You, O God, have heard my vows;
You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name.
6 You will prolong the king’s life,
His years as many generations.
7 He shall abide before God forever.
Oh, prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him!
8 So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may daily perform my vows. (NKJV)
Prayer can take us higher (verse 2), help us live longer (verse 6), preserve us (verse 7), and may eventually lead us, like it did David, to praise (verse 8). See, the A/C in my home doesn’t CHANGE the outside heat index. That external heat is unchanging. It does, however, change my personal comfort level inside. Incredibly, prayer does not always take away the actual trial. But it can transform our internal stress to praise as God attends to our cry.
My question is this: are our lives prayer-conditioned? Have we turned on the “cool” that is access to God Almighty through prayer? If prayer and praise are our relief during intense trials, let’s prayer-condition our lives this summer. Let us be a people who cry to God. And when scorching heat comes, let’s blast the A/C!
